In 2020, 5,224 deaths were recorded as suicide in England & Wales
As much of our time is spent at work the actions (or inactions) of colleagues, managers and even customers can have a profound effect on mental wellbeing – as can the environment we work in. It’s inevitable this may contribute towards poor mental health and, in severe cases, result in suicide.
Despite this clear link, there’s no requirement for employers to include any reference to suicide prevention or risk mitigation in company policies. In fact, death by suicide doesn’t even need to be reported to the HSE (even when on company time or premises, or where work life’s a factor).
Suicide has a profound impact on surviving friends and family – and a significant impact on companies and the economy. Together we can do more to help prevent suicide.
“Thank you for the suicide prevention policy, we are in the early stages of implementation. We realise it was something we needed, but lacked the confidence to drive it…” – Rachel
